USA. New steel plant to rise in Pittsburg.
The curtain will soon rise on a new era in steel production in this Delta city, as a multimillion-dollar pipe factory takes shape.
Since breaking ground earlier this year, crews have been working on the foundation for the United Spiral Pipe factory, a three-way joint venture involving United States Steel Corp. and two South Korean steel-makers, POSCO and SeAH Steel Corp.

South Africa: steel prices about to rise again.

STEEL prices are set for another rise next month, bringing total increases in some product lines so far this year to 72%.
ArcelorMittal SA said yesterday prices would go up 3%-7% next month on rising international prices. Long and flat products would rise an average of R500 a ton. Wire rod would rise 14%, or up to R1000 a ton, Mittal spokesman Tami Didiza said. The move was necessitated by rising input costs and was in line with international prices.

China's leading steel maker Baosteel Group said on Tuesday it would form a 35.86 billion yuan (5.12 billion U.S. dollars) joint venture in Guangzhou with two domestic rivals.
Baosteel is to own 80 percent of the new company, with a 28.688 billion yuan investment, while Guangzhou Iron and Steel Enterprises and Shaoguan Iron and Steel Group will take a combined 20 percent stake with existing assets, Baosteel said in statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

India: steel output growth slows, falls below Asian average.
India has recorded the lowest growth rate in steel production among the five Asian countries for the first five months of 2008.
Indian steel production grew by 4.1 per cent during January-May against an Asian average of 7.9 per cent, according to data available with the International Iron & Steel Institute (IISI).

South Korea's POSCO said it would cut stainless steel output by 25,000 tonnes in July due to inventory build-up as buyers delay purchases on expectations of lower prices.
"We've decided to cut output in July in an attempt to normalise market conditions and will keep our production schedule flexible," a POSCO spokeswoman said.

South Korea's iron and steel production capacity is estimated to reach 70.53 million tonnes a year by 2010, up 18 percent from the current 59.82 million tonnes, an industry association said on Monday.
South Korea, the world's fifth-largest iron and steelmaker, will invest 7.49 trillion won this year in building and upgrading facilities, up 73.2 percent from a year ago, the Korea Iron and Steel Association (KOSA) said in a statement.

Finnish stainless steel maker Outokumpu plans to double ferrochrome production.
Metals group Outokumpu Oyj said Tuesday that it will invest €420 million (US$650 million) to double ferrochrome production in Finland to 530,000 tons a year.
The world's No. 2 stainless steel maker said its governing board had approved the measure and that the new capacity will be reached by 2011.
